THE IMPORTANCE OF HAND HYGEINE AT WORK

We’ve all heard throughout the Covid-19 pandemic how important it is to avoid touching our faces in order to prevent the transfer of germs and viruses from our hands to our eyes, nose and mouth. Wearing a disposable or fabric face mask while working in an office environment can act as a great reminder to mitigate touching these areas of our face, but there are inevitably times when masks are removed, or we are tempted to touch our eyes.

Proper hand hygiene in a work setting is important for the health of each individual employee, but also for the workforce at large. As employees move about their daily routines in the office, they come in contact with countless surfaces and objects. Providing staff members with supplies and locations to perform useful hand hygiene practices will help them stay healthy. This in turn means fewer sick days, and a workforce that is healthier and happier.

SOAP, WATER AND HAND SANITIZER

Providing clean restrooms with ample supplies of soap, warm water, and paper towels/hand dryers is one vital part of the equation. However, between restroom visits, it is crucial that employees have access to hand sanitizer in and around the workplace.

In order to remind employees to use clean their hands throughout the workday, it is imperative that sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol is consistently within sight. This important visual reminder, coupled with ease of access, will encourage staff members to use hand sanitizer frequently and effectively.

Recommend locations for placing hand sanitizer:

  1. Entrances/exits
  2. Break areas or other locations where employees may congregate to socialize
  3. Cafeterias, coffee stations and huddle rooms
  4. Conference rooms
  5. Desks
  6. High-traffic areas or doorways/passageways that connect different parts of a building
  7. Corridors or hallways where employees may be encountering other people while moving throughout the office
  8. Employee briefcases, backpacks, handbags and vehicles

Setting up hand hygiene stations throughout your workspace will give staff the ability to easily and quickly sanitize their hands throughout the day. Take it one step further and invest in travel sized hand sanitizers for your team members and encourage employees to keep a bottle in their vehicles, and their bags/lunchboxes.
